Bio-Garbiker: Energy use

On February 7 2001, Garbiker and the Basque Energy Board (EVE), a company operating under auspices of the Basque Government, signed a collaboration agreement to promote and run the limited liability company Bio-Garbiker, set up to make use of the energy generated by the biogas from the controlled landfills in Igorre and Jata (Lemoiz).
The initial investment amounts to 1,56 million euro, and intends to optimise the collection of biogas by means of new wells, the extension of existing ones, the construction of a pipe network and the building of an electrical generator.
The process eliminates the gases generated by rubbish during its fermentation and allows use to be made of the methane gas to produce electricity by means of a generator. The energy obtained is sold on the network for subsequent consumption.
Environmental improvements in the system:
* Degassification of the landfill.
* Elimination of methane gas given off by the landfill - one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect.
Surveys carried out indicate that flows of from 2 to 2.5 million cubic metres of gas could be extracted per year in a sustained manner and for a long period of time: 20 years in Igorre and 15 in Jata.
The results obtained indicate that the production of methane-rich biogas make its collection and use for energy a viable proposition.
Socioeconimic performance: use of a renewable form of energy such as biogas to produce electricity.
In 2005 Bio-Garbiker will operate on each of the two landfills with a 475 kW generator which runs 24 hours a day. During the first three years, a total of 15 million kW will be produced.
The Biogarbiker project is included within the 3E 2005-Eneregy Strategy Plan of the Basque Country, the basic pillars of which are energy saving and the development of renewable forms of energy.
